Peaceful Spirit Adult Services

Peaceful Spirit is a SUCAP program division that addresses individual and family issues related to alcohol and substance use and abuse. Recovery from addiction is a major part of all program efforts, but Peaceful Spirit also helps persons who are not addicted or dependent on any substance. Non-addicted persons sometimes get DUIs, or get in trouble with the law when drunk or high.

Peaceful Spirit has several programs for adults:

A few words about addiction, treatment and recovery

Much of the work of Peaceful Spirit Adult Services is to help individuals who have become alcohol dependent or addicted to other substances initiate the process of recovery. Recovery is an on-going, lifelong process engaged in by persons who wish to live alcohol or drug-free lives.

Decades of medical and scientific research now agree: addiction to alcohol or other drugs is a medical condition related to individual differences in brain chemistry. This is not widely known or understood in society. Individuals with addictions still must cope with what some now call SPAM: Stigma, Prejudice and Misunderstanding.

The behavior of persons with addictions often does not make sense to those who do not have addictions. After all, why would people keep drinking and drugging when serious negative consequences occur? (Readers who are interested are encouraged to learn more. Peaceful Spirit recommends the Addiction Science Research and Education Center at the University of Texas website as a good place to start.)
