It's a drug
Whether it's alcohol, tobacco, prescription pills, or marijuana, these are drugs which have dangerous consequences for young people and can lead to addiction. For information on the dangers of these and other drugs click here. Many people consider these drugs to be more acceptable and less dangerous than more "hardcore" drugs such as crystal meth, cocaine, and heroin. And let's face it, they are more popular: many adults who would never use or approve of hard drugs nonetheless engage in recreational use of alcohol, tobacco, prescription pills, or even marijuana. And these drugs are popular with kids too.
Does your behavior regarding these drugs send a message to young people that it is ok for them to use?
Set a good example
We know that children model adult behavior, even negative behavior. When you use alcohol, tobacco, prescription pills, or marijuana irresponsibly, or when you tolerate your children's using them, this can send a message to young people that it is OK to use these drugs.
Don't be an unintentional supplier
Alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs, and marijuana are popular with many adults. In some cases it is legal for adults to use them, so they are widely available in the community. Even though they are illegal for kids, these drugs are easier for kids to get simply because they are popular with adults. They are often present and available in liquor cabinets, refrigerators, and medicine cabinets in our own homes or other places our kids visit.
When the question is "Where are our kids getting it?" Far too often the answer: "From us." We are responsible.
Studies show that more kids get alcohol from their
parents' supplies than from a negligent liquor store clerk. Study:

Be part of the solution!
Be aware of how your own behavior affects kids' ability to get their hands on alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and prescription drugs. And remember that our kids get a strong message about right and wrong by watching the actions of the adults they love and respect.
