Southern Ute Community Action Programs, Inc. (SUCAP) is one of the largest and most accomplished independent, non-profit organizations on the Western Slope of Colorado. Created by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe on October 10, 1966, SUCAP received its non-profit corporate certification as an independent entity in 1967. SUCAP has been in continuous service ever since and has grown into a dynamic entrepreneurial organization dedicated to its mission:
- To promote the well-being of families and neighbors through social, educational and economic growth.
- To provide services to all persons in the Ignacio area, regardless of race, ethnic origin, religion, or any other group characteristics.
Most SUCAP programs serve the community of Ignacio, Colorado, where SUCAP is headquartered. However, some programs operate across La Plata County. One SUCAP program division, The Training Advantage, operates in 11 counties in partnership with the Colorado Workforce Center system.
SUCAP is organized into six program divisions:
- Southern Ute Montessori Head Start and Early Head Start (child development programs)
- Peaceful Spirit (alcohol and substance treatment for adults, teens and families)
- Ignacio Senior Center (nutrition, wellness and extended independence)
- The Training Advantage (job training programs in 11 Southwest Colorado counties)
- Youth Services Division (alcohol and drug prevention through FUN)
- Road Runner Transit (public transit connecting Ignacio and Bayfield with Durango)
Sometimes SUCAP's administrative offices will direct programs "creatively" categorized under Other Programs. Furthermore, SUCAP values partnership and collaboration, and frequently joins with other non-profit organizations, school districts, and government units to address community needs.
Currently, SUCAP is the fiscal agent for:
Healthy Lifestyle La Plata, Ignacio Community Collaboration, La Plata County Step-it-up Prevention Coalition (Substance Abuse).
SUCAP is a major employer in La Plata County. Its staff of over 175 people in full- and part-time positions serve the community through the various SUCAP programs.
SUCAP is governed by a 14-member board of directors following the Community Action Programs model.
