The citizens of La Plata County have formed the Step It Up Coalition, with support from a federal Drug Free Community Support Program grant.  Coalition participating agencies and individuals make the Coalition:  SUCAP Youth Services, La Plata Youth Services, San Juan Basin Health Department, Community Connections, Big Brothers Big Sisters, La Plata County's school districts and the Durango Latino Education Coalition collaborate with other community members, youth and laws to create a positive and drug-free environment for La Plata's youth.

The Coalition supports the following programs, projects and movements;

  • TAMBO Respite Care
  • La Plata Youth Services Mentoring Programs
  • del Alma Mentoring Program
  • Monthly Volunteer Soiree (1st Thursday of the month at Lost Dog Bar & Grill: Main Street in Durango)
  • La Plata County Methamphetamine Forum
  • 9-R School District Reality Check
  • Across Ages Mentoring Program
  • Local Radio Campaigns
  • Healthy Kids for Colorado Surveys in Ignacio, Bayfield and Durango
  • T-Shirt Myths and Facts Campaign in Bayfield and Ignacio High School
  • Recognition to Volunteers that work with youth
  • Positive Youth Development
  • Meth Awareness Panels and Presentations in the county
